LOIRE GOLF at Manoir de La Pigeonnerie.
Inclusive golf holidays- 5 local courses
Chris and Judith Alcock invite you to try a very special golfing holiday from our home in the Anjou region of the beautiful Loire Valley.
Just 30 minutes from the city of Angers and two hours south of the ferry at St Malo, the ‘Manoir de la Pigeonnerie’ offers a perfect base to explore 5 or more local golf courses and the stunning scenery of this wonderful region.
Chris makes all your golfing arrangements including admittance tickets, maps & directions and reservations of buggies etc. Our discounted green fees and excellent access to tee times mean you can play every day, if you wish.. There are no queues for the tees and you rarely see anyone else on the fairways. Take your time, relax and enjoy the scenery. Guests have referred to this as ‘millionaire’s golf without the matching price tag!’
Our ‘petit Manoir’, built in the 1850s, has stunning gothic windows and is set in beautiful gardens in the centre of a traditional village with a pharmacy, mini-supermarket and two bars. Here, we offer accommodation for up to eight guests in 4 comfortable en-suite bedrooms; each recently refurbished and with tea/coffee making facilities.
Rooms can be set up to suit either couples or golfing buddies and all rooms are often taken by 8 friends who then enjoy a private house-party atmosphere.
For dinner, there are excellent restaurants nearby, or guests often dine with us in our large dining room, where they can taste the results of Judith’s magic touch with local ingredients, fresh fruit and vegetables from the garden and a selection of regional wines.
For breaks for larger groups, we have teamed up with a friendly hotel in the pretty town of Chateau Gontier. In this case, Chris organises all the golf and acts as your personal representative whilst you stay at the hotel.
Of course, this area is also famous for its beautiful chateaux and wonderful wine. We are happy to advise on the best tourist routes and vineyards within an easy drive.
For 2011, prices for 4 night/3round breaks start from just £199pp

The golf courses:
Anjou Golf and Country Club (20 mins drive) Par 72, 6884 Yards, slope 135
A Frederic Hawtree designed course offering rolling fairways and ancient forests. This course can be enjoyed by players of any standard and is beautifully maintained by a friendly team. The course is quite long, and many greens are hidden behind large trees. There are plenty of bunkers to overcome, but on the whole, these are well shaped and fair to play from. The fairways are good, and the greens are true; although the rough can prove challenging!
Sablé Solesmes (40 mins drive) Par 72, 6273 Yards, Slope 133
This beautifully landscaped course offers you a choice of three different styles of play on its 27 holes: woodland, links or target-golf. All three sections have lashings of water and plenty of challenge. It is a base for the European Challenge Tour and is topped off by an excellent clubhouse, bar and restaurant.
Not for the fainthearted, this course is renowned for being both stimulating and challenging. The club claims to offer golfing heaven, and who are we to disagree! The clubhouse and facilities are unrivalled, and this modern course is well manicured. There are long rolling fairways and many water hazards over the three 9-hole courses, (“Forest“, “River” & “Cascade”) which can be linked to suit your play.
The 9-hole “Riviere” course follows the American style, with plenty of water to overcome. Accuracy is needed, and there are some spectacular views.
“La forêt” is a long 9-hole course, open in design, and probably the easiest of the three to play.
Finally, “Cascade” resembles a Scottish links course. Quite hilly in parts, it has lots of bunkers to take into consideration.
Chateau de la Perriere (Avrillé) (20 mins drive) Par 71, 6688 yards.
The recently restored 17th Century Chateau clubhouse is a great place to start and end a game of two halves. Set in botanical gardens, with many different species of tree, this course has well defended greens, lots of water, and some tricky dog-legs. Fairly flat, the course is an easy walk, but the golf gets more difficult as you progress. Beware the huge bunkers on the 17th and 18th holes.
Baugé (50 mins drive) Par 72, 6277 Yards.
This unique set-up has been described as sensational, and is definitely for the energetic. In an area full of great courses, this one is highly rated and not to be missed. The course is usually kept in beautiful condition throughout the year. Most holes are completely surrounded by natural forest, and there are no “straightforward” holes. There are some long walks between green and tee, and the 16th has a particularly steep slope, so don’t be afraid to use a buggy if your energy levels are dwindling!
Laval (50 mins drive) Par 72, 6636 Yards.
High on the escarpment above the town of Laval, this course offers interesting terrain, with wide fairways and American-style bunkers. Not as intimidating as it first appears, this course is nevertheless a challenge, and there are several slopes that may prove difficult to read. Due to the terrain, a buggy can be a good idea! Many guests rate this as their preferred course in the area.
