Our village of Ennistymon, Cascades Village is the market town of North Clare. The town grew up around the shallow crossing of the River Inagh, which is now spanned by a bridge that offers a magnificent view of the Cascades. When the river is in flood, the Cascades form a roaring torrent of water for over 200 metres in a series of rocky steps. The best view of the Cascades is obtained from River Walk, reached by going through the Archway of Bow Lane in Main Street. Ennistymon is the birthplace of Brian Merriman (born 1749), whose poem "Cúirt an Mhéan Oíche" (The Midnight Court) is a classic in Irish Literature. . An annual Summer School is held in the area to commemorate his work
Being the market town of North Clare, Ennistymon offers a wide choice of shopping facilities. Many of the shops still carry on their business behind original 19th century Shopfronts. The shopfronts of Ennistymon have featured in books, posters and calendars over the last few years and they play an important part in Irish town architecture.
