AlmaVerde Village & Spa Location

AlmaVerde village is situated on a 58 hectare rustic setting among mature oak, pine and carob trees at the gateway to the Costa Vicentina Natural Park. The site enjoys an elevated position with sweeping views over the surrounding countryside. To the North, the site overlooks the traditional village of Barão de São Miguel, and to the South, the Burgau valley and coastal hills. The beach at the picturesque fishing village of Burgau is just three minutes by car, while the historic port of Lagos, with its colourful markets, attractive marina and vibrant nightlife, is only ten minutes away.

Villa Rentals

With easy access to the pristine golden beaches of the vast Costa Vicentina Natural Park, yet only 10 minutes’ drive from lively Lagos, AlmaVerde is ideally located for a relaxing get-away.

Set in award-winning, landscaped surroundings, each AlmaVerde villa is built, furnished and equipped to the highest standard, and includes its own private, heated swimming pool.

At the end of the long, tree-lined approach drive, the stylish new Reception Building provides a warm welcome to guests, as well as acting as the hub for information and activities on the resort. Within the Reception Building is a spacious, sprung-floored exercise Studio for group classes and activities, including yoga, tai chi and dance. The building also houses offices for real estate sales and villa management.

Maps and mountain bikes are available from Reception to help explore the AlmaVerde trail system as well as the tracks and back roads of the local area. Cycle over to the National Forest above Barão S. João or explore the dramatic cliffs and beaches of the nearby coastline.

You can also play tennis at the AlmaVerde Racquets Club. Built and maintained to the highest standard, the four floodlit synthetic grass courts will help you to enjoy your game with minimal stress on joints and ligaments. You can rent courts and equipment, book an individual coaching session, or join a group clinic.

Beaches nearby

The beaches in the Western Algarve are among the most beautiful and least crowded in Europe. Choose from among the many sheltered sandy coves along the South coast, or venture a little further afield to one of the more dramatic West coast beaches, open to the full force of the Atlantic swell.

There are a plethora of sports and activities in the Western Algarve to partake including a variety of water sports, fishing and horse riding.

Golf

The Algarve is one of Europe’s premier golf destinations, with over twenty courses west of Faro, including some of the top championship courses in Europe. All are within an hour’s drive from AlmaVerde. Warm playing conditions and immaculately manicured fairways and greens are the norm. In the Western Algarve there are five established courses - Alto Club, Boavista, Palmares, Parque da Floresta and Penina - with more under construction. The nearest course to AlmaVerde, Parque da Floresta, is only 3km away.

Although AlmaVerde does not have its own golf course, it is possible to purchase a lifetime Golf Title that gives you and your spouse the right to unlimited free golf on any one of over 55 courses in Portugal and Spain. The Golf Title also enables you to make bookings at preferred rates for your friends and family.

Alto Club is a Mowlem development in Alvor, west of Portimão. The 18-hole course was the last to be designed by the late Sir Henry Cotton. It is set in parklands, with views to the sea and to the Monchique hills. It is well-maintained but compact, with several of the fairways servicing more than one hole. The most memorable hole is the “Henry Cotton challenge” or “giant” 605 metre sixteenth.

Boavista Golf 6,053 metres, 18 holes, par 71

Designed by Howard Swan, a former President of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects, to harmonise with the natural terrain, this 18-hole championship course was opened at the beginning of 2002 and has already hosted the Sir Henry Cooper/Mike Reid Charity Golf Classic. The signature hole on the outward 9 is the par-4 7th, which is set against the backdrop of the Atltantic Ocean with views extending from Praia da Luz in the Southwest to the hills of Monchique in the Northeast.

Palmares Golf Course 5,961 metres, 18 holes, par (SSS) 71 (72)

Palmares is one of the most scenic courses in the Algarve, with the majority of holes on gentle slopes above Meia Praia, a wide sandy beach stretching for several kilometres, from the new Lagos marina to the river mouth at Algor. The course has five pure links holes on the front nine, between the railway and the beach. The upper holes wind through groves of fig and almond trees. Palmares is best known for its “Almond Blossom” tournament in February when these trees are covered in a mass of pink and white bloom.

PENINA Golf Resort

Championship: 6,343 metres, 18 holes, par (SSS) 73 
Resort: 2,987 metres, 9 holes, par 35
Academy: 2,035 metres, 9 holes, par 30

Part of the five star Meridien Penina Golf & Resort, the 18-hole championship course is the oldest in the Algarve and the one most associated with Sir Henry Cotton, Penina has hosted the Portuguese Open six times, the last time in 1998, as well as the World Team Championship once. There are also two separate 9-hole courses. The courses are relatively flat and run through well-treed, mature parkland.

New Courses

There are several new courses planned or under construction in the Western Algarve, including: Espiche Campo de Golfe, situated in the countryside between Espiche and Barão de São João west of Lagos, an 18-hole championship golf course is currently under development, together with a real estate project for 119 villa plots and an aparthotel.

As 70% of the game of golf is decided with approach and putting, the course has been specifically designed to test and improve a players skills in these areas. The greens are built to provide a very consistent putting surface, and are also especially receptive to a well struck shot.

Gramacho Golf Course

In the traditional undulating landscape of the Algarve, full of almond and carob-trees,the course is played to 18 large double greens, giving the player a different perspective on each of the rounds

Vale da Pinta Golf Course

Imagine the fairways of Bermuda grass, strategically placed sand bunkers, and greens clad in Pen Cross Bent grass. Not to mention ornamental lakes in a rolling terrain dotted with carob, fig, almond and olive trees (including one olive tree over 1200 years old!)

Silves Golf Course

This course is for players - low handicaps will find it a serious challenge to come in under par. But high handicaps (with concentration) will be able to enjoy their round. Most holes offer spectacular mountain views overlooking palm trees and olive groves, the surrounding cork and citrus farms generate a true feeling of authentic Portuguese golf.

The Oceânico O'Connor Jnr course is a course which offers no less of a challenge, large areas of water demand accurate play and creative shot making with the lakes and streams being maintained as a wildlife sanctuary.

Salgados Golf Course

One of Europe's most spectacular golf courses with no two holes being remotely similar. The variety and appeal of this unique course are endless, it offers fantastic views of the surrounding Algarve countryside and the Atlantic Ocean beyond.

All courses with preferential agreements with Prainha and most of them have already been chosen to host Caniço-Prainha golf cup, going to the XVIII edition.
