Self Catering Hadrians Wall, just off the beaten track, on a working farm, the location is idyllic - a real home from home, with superb views over Talkin Tarn. We have been awarded a 3 star rating by the Tourist Board.
Tarnside is working Farm and Racing Stables. Maurice and Anne Barnes are the owners and the atmosphere is a friendly one ,everyone is welcome and nothing is too much trouble. The log fire is great and can be used all year round ,plenty of logs and all free of charge !! Champagne and Flowers can be arranged prior to your visit ,for that special treat !! All our visitors will find a complimentary bottle of wine and a sweet treat on arrival and the fire will be crackling if they arrive in the evening or if it is a cold wet day. I f visitors are travelling from afar we can easily get basic groceries if ordered before arrival.

The Tarn is only 10 mins walk from the centre of Farlam , a lovely walk to end the day. The local Pub is at Talkin Village ,a mile up the road.Brampton is 2 miles away and there are some really interesting shops including a big Antique Centre.Hadrian's Wall is 10 mins drive,Gretna Green 20 mins, Carlisle 20 mins,Newcastle 50 mins. Visitors are free to wander about the Stables when staff are about,and if they wish it can be arranged for visits to the Gallops !! Dogs can be taken into the fields around the farm for their daily exercise.
Carlisle is the Great Border City and offers a selection of things to do including The Castle, Tullie House Museum and The Cathedral,A super variety of shops and good places to eat. We are close to Hexham too ,and we often have runners at the race course .If you enjoy walking then this is the place to stay,the fells behind Tarnside are very unspoilt and the R S P B own quite a large part ,most of which is open to the Public. Birdlife is excellent ,we have bird tables outside both cottages and visitors can see the Greater Spotted Woodpecker and the little Nuthatch who visit all the time for their daily supply of nuts etc. !!
Some good places to enjoy food locally. The Duke of Cumberland at Castle Carrock use our free range eggs for their superb home made menu. If you like to run ,then it is great to go round the Tarn early morning. You can have a Fish Pedicure in Brampton ,it is very relaxing at ICON Beauty Salon.

Brampton Golf Course is situated in a beautiful area of North Cumbria and boasts superb views of the Lake District, the North Pennines and Southern Scotland. The course is best described as undulating heathland offering a challenge to all standards of golfer in an idyllic setting. Golf World in 1995 described the course as "The Jewel of Cumbria", and visitors have likened it to a "Mini Gleneagles"
Eden Golf Club 27 holes
The Eden Golf Championship Course is a hidden gem, situated along the banks of the River Eden. Tight tree-lined fairways and numerous natural water hazards mark this course out as a great test of golf. The 9 hole course offers a contrast in style to the existing Championship Course. Hadrian's course covers 100 acres and includes some tremendous specimen trees as well as steep gullies and undulations which are brought into play on several holes.
The course is Par 71 (73 for Ladies) with tree lined fairways and many memorable holes. Many regard Carlisle as one of (if not the) finest inland courses in the North of England. The course presents a tough challenge to the proficient golfer whilst not being fiendishly difficult for the higher handicappers. The status of the Course is augmented by a reputation for having magnificent greens and well manicured fairways.
Stonyholme Golf Course is an award winning 18 hole, par 69, pay as you play golf course of the highest order, designed by Frank Pennink in 1974.
Haltwhistle Golf Club is the only golf club on both Hadrian's Wall footpath and the Pennine Way. This golf course offers excellent viewsover the Tyne Valley, East to Haltwhistle and beyond. To the North and West lie Gilsland, Brampton and Spadeadam.

]]>Drybeck Hall, the home of Anthony and Lulie Hothfield, is a beautiful listed Grade 2* traditional farmhouse built in local sandstone in 1679. It is set in a picturesque peaceful valley surrounded by grass fields where sheep and cattle graze. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the modern world, this is the place for you to recharge your batteries and enjoy the tranquillity of our family home and its surroundings.
This warm and comfortable house retains many original features and is furnished in a traditional manner with an open wood fire in the pretty sitting room. There is an attractive garden to wander around or you can sit in the front garden and enjoy a view that has changed little over the years, a world away from day to day routine. It is ideally situated to explore the unspoilt Eden Valley.
There is a large hard tennis cour within the grounds. You can bring your horse to stay as well and enjoy riding on the Orton Fells maybe accompanied by Lulie on her Icelandic horse Loki. Anthony’s family have had a home in the area for some 800 years and he is knowledgeable about his famous ancestor Lady Anne Clifford. In his youth Anthony was British Real Tennis Amateur Champion.
There are several good eating places in Appleby-in-Westmorland but if you want to eat in, Lulie, a trained cook, will provide you with a delicious meal as long as you book in advance. Her specialities include soup made with fresh sorrel from her garden, curried fish and homemade strawberry and damson ice cream
