Shute is situated in an idyllic, secluded setting within the beautiful, wooded Teign Valley, a mile from The Dartmoor National Park and within easy access of Devon’s South Coast beaches.
The house nestles amongst rolling hills in an area of outstanding natural beauty. It is a 5 minute stroll from the historic village of Doddiscombsleigh with its famous, award-winning pub 'The Nobody Inn' and only 8 miles from the cathedral city of Exeter with its mainline station, access to the M5 motorway, and busy airport.
Shute is a 15th century, thatched, Grade II listed Devon longhouse. It stands in 5 acres of sunny gardens, woodland and meadows with stream, which you are welcome to explore during your stay. Shute offers two large, stylish, double bedrooms, each with their own private bathroom and a self-contained, private family room in a recently converted barn conversion.
Staying at Shute Cottage
Shute consists of two tastefully decorated double bedrooms, each with their own private bathroom for your exclusive use. One bedroom has a king-sized bed, the other a super-king bed. Twin beds can be organised.
The house is centrally heated during the winter. Both rooms have uninterrupted views of gardens leading out to sweeping meadows and woodland. The only sounds are birdsong, trickling water from the stream, bleating sheep, and horses trotting down the lane. Each room has its own coffee and tea-making facilities, Sky TV, and broadband connectivity is available. We have a highchair and cot for children. Parking is plentiful. The house has a non-smoking policy.
You are welcome to relax in the dining room with its open-hearth fireplace, wood burning stove, sofa and bread oven.
Breakfast
A large, hearty, West Country cooked breakfast is offered as well as toast and jams, fruit, cereals, filter coffee and juices. The ingredients are all locally sourced and organic where possible.
Barn Conversion: A family room or couple’s retreat!
A self-contained, private, room ideal for either a family or a peaceful retreat for a couple keen for some privacy and tranquillity. The barn was converted to a high standard at the end of 2008. Whilst retaining its 15th Century charm, the barn boasts a smart new kitchen area with butler sink, hob, fridge, washing machine, microwave, and television, as well as an ensuite shower room with powershower.
It has a South facing terrace with table and chairs in the garden for alfresco dining and bird watching! The barn sleeps two adults and one child. Linen is included.
Shute is in an ideal position for a rustic, relaxing break with the popular Nobody Inn a short stroll down the lane and a public footpath across the fields into the next valley and 'The Manor Inn' at Ashton with its excellent food. It is a perfect base from which to explore Dartmoor with its beautiful villages, pubs, varied activities and attractions. Walking enthusiasts will be overwhelmed by the number of beautiful walks in the area. Also very nearby is Haldon Forest Park - Go Ape
Golf nearby with the 18 hole Teign Valley Golf Course just 10 minutes away, and the world renowned Bovey Castle championship course, voted Best Golf resort 2005 at the World Travel awards, is approximately 12 miles away.
Teign Valley Golf Club sits naturally in a beautifully mature landscape, mainly on the lower gently undulating slopes and meadows of the Teign Valley - one of Devon's most picturesque valleys set in the Dartmoor National Park. The rolling hills, unspoilt woodland and river help create a feeling of escape. The club is privately owned and open to both members and visitors alike.

Come and enjoy a relaxing break at our comfortable B&B in the village of Beaford set in the beautiful North Devon countryside. There are so many things to see and do in North Devon, that if you come for a weekend you will want to stay for a week and if you come for a week, you will want to return again and again!
If you just want to relax, there are several good walks from our bungalow, or maybe you would prefer to stroll in the lovely gardens at Rosemoor, only a 5 minute drive away. Another 5 minutes from Rosemoor, and you can pick up the Tarka trail at Torrington for walking or cycling. Additionally, the beautiful North Devon coast, with its stunning cliff walks and beautiful beaches, is less than an hour’s drive away, and the North Cornwall coast is not much further.
Great Torrington, our closest town, has a long history, which includes the important part it played towards the end of the English Civil War. The town boasts several attractions, including the Plough Arts Centre (for films, plays and live music), the 1646 heritage and tourist information centre, and the famous Dartington Crystal.
There are also several good pubs and eating establishments, including an excellent Indian restaurant. In fact there are lots of good pubs and restaurants we can recommend to you in this area and, closer to home, our village pub The Globe Inn, serves great pub food and is a mere 100 yards from our front door – perfect after a hard day’s walking!
Slightly further afield are the larger towns of Bideford and Barnstaple, both well worth a visit, then there are the 2 moors, Dartmoor and Exmoor, both full of wildlife and…well there is so much more…come and see!
The Accommodation
We have 2 large family sized guest bedrooms, one double and one twin bedded, which share their own private shower room – ideal for a family or group of friends. An air bed can be put into either or both rooms if younger children wish to share with their parents. Both rooms are fully equipped with Flatscreen TV/DVD players and tea/coffee making facilities.
We have plenty of off road parking and, being situated on the main road (A3124) through the village, we are easy to find.
On your arrival we will offer you tea and biscuits, or, for £3.00 per head, a traditional cream tea with fresh scones and local clotted cream and jam, or a selection of home or locally made cakes. (If you are staying for 3 days or more, your first cream tea will be free!
A varied and delicious breakfast of your choice (including of course the traditional full English) will be served between 8.30 and 9.30 in our spacious dining room, or, weather permitting, in the garden. If you wish to eat earlier, just let us know beforehand.
We can also provide packed lunches if you are planning a day out.
Please advise when booking if you have any special dietary requirements or allergies.
The Post House is a non-smoking home and, we can only take pets by prior arrangement.

Royal North Devon/Westward Ho Golf Club
The course stretches out to over 7,000 yards from the championship tees (used for the West of England Championship – one of the top amateur events in the calendar), although most will agree that it’s a suitably stiff test at 6,650 yards, especially when the wind blows. Even with today’s modern equipment a par score for the top scratch players is never easy.
A very attractive 9 hole/18 tee heathland course, it's 4th/13th hole par 3 of 240 yards is one of the best holes in the area. It is very free draining which enables the course to remain open when many others are closed.
Highbullen's 18-hole USGA specification golf course is set in richly wooded parkland with breathtaking views towards Dartmoor and Exmoor. The 5600 yard, par 68 course is an excellent test for any golfer and a chance to practice your golf skills.

The main bar is partly timbered and the dining room has double bi-fold double-glazed doors with fine views across open countryside towards the sea. Blackawton is buried in a maze of lanes about 4 miles north of Slapton. A lovely village with a real community spirit, an excellent primary school, a little shop cum Post Office and church, a well used Village Hall, it is a previous winner of the CPRE's “Best Kept Village” competition and host to the annual International Festival of Worm Charming held every early May Bank Holiday weekend (on the Sunday).

Our accommodation, rated as 3 star *** by "Quality In Tourism" for "Vist England", is clean and comfortable, and comprises 3 double rooms and a family room which may be configured as a premium rate double or twin - all rooms have en-suite shower facilities, and have hot drink facilities, TV & hair dryers. All our guest bedrooms are on the first floor. The George Inn, Blackawton is an old building with fairly steep, narrow stairs. Therefore disabled access is not the easiest.

Food: We recently signed up to "Taste of the West" to celebrate our commitment to using local produce and local suppliers. A wide variety of food is available both lunchtime 12 noon to 2 p.m. and 6 - 9 pm. evening (7pm. to 9pm. Sunday). Our Sunday roast lunch offers to advance bookings their preferred choice of roast, comes with all the trimmings and is "table service" rather than a carvery. Our extensive menu features local produce, freshly cooked and includes pizza, chicken korma, sizzling skillet dishes, an excellent vegetarian choice and a variety of home-baked desserts. The “specials menu” changes weekly and offers home baked pies, pasta and locally caught, seasonal fish.
Drink: A great selection of cask ales on offer will certainly include those from local brewers Dartmoor (Princetown) and Teignworthy (Newton Abbott) - often alongside guest ales selected from the many other craft brewers in and around the South Hams and the wider West Country. Our BEER FESTIVALS in early May and late August always feature some of the best cask ales from West Country breweries. Bigbury, South-Devon
The attractive small village of Bigbury with a population of 300-400 boasts a fabulous 18 hole golf course, a good local pub, a village store and is home to 'The Oyster Shack' the well known fish restaurant. Two miles South West you will find Bigbury on Sea and the renowned Burgh Island, with its art deco hotel and Agatha Christie/Poirot connections, along with its pub - The Pilchard Inn, dating back to the 14th century, a favourite haunt for smugglers, and where time almost seems to have stood still. This wonderful, unspoilt little island has been featured in many films, is a natural bird sanctuary and can be reached on foot at low tide, or by the very tall Burgh Island Sea Tractor at high tide.

The market town of Kingsbridge lies at the head of the Kingsbridge/Salcombe Estuary and has been the principal market town of the region since 962AD. It is said to have derived its name from a Saxon king when on reaching Dodbrooke during his travels, was unable to cross the stream, so a volunteer from a local family carried the king across the Dod on his back. Kingsbridge to this day remains the capital of the South Hams and offers an assortment of things to do and see, including an excellent range of shops. Here you can buy some first rate quality clothes and there are several shops with a creative and artistic flair, a large supermarket and there are also some outstanding restaurants, plus of course several pubs, some being waterside. A round trip river cruise of approximately an hour to Salcombe is a very pleasant and relaxing way of seeing the countryside and many of the estuary birds that inhabit this unique and exceptionally beautiful stretch of water.

The beautiful sailing mecca of the Salcombe estuary with its golden beaches is only 3 miles. This is a gorgeous spot, ideal for walking, golf, bird watching, sailing and all types of watersports.
Each cottage is very comfortably equipped and attractively furnished in a charming country style. The kitchens are fitted and well equipped with an eye level electric oven, electric hob, dishwasher, microwave, washer/dryer and fridge with ice box. The cottages have TVs with DVD and CD/radio players. All bathrooms have heated towel rails and all bedrooms have fitted cupboards.
Outside: Court Barton is approached along a private drive and each cottage has its own designated parking space and there is plenty of visitor parking. Grouped around and accessed from two flower filled courtyards, with manicured lawns, each cottage has either its own private terrace or balcony provided with garden furniture. The extensive grounds are enclosed and bordered by fields with outstanding views down to the sea.

Indoor swimming pool. 5.5m x 11m heated and available all year. His and Hers changing rooms. Shower room with basin and WC.
Tennis Court. Newly resurfaced and set in a peaceful location in the grounds. Rackets and balls provided.
Croquet Lawn. Beautifully maintained, perfect for a battle of mallets and wits! Croquet set provided. Built-in barbecue alongside.
Reception. This is manned from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm Monday to Friday inclusive. A comfortable area close to reception is provided with Broadband WiFi and seating for those who wish to catch up on those essential emails (available only during reception open hours).

Thurlestone Golf Club
Situated right on the coast, the course is a mix of links and cliff-top terrain. The course is well-draining and rarely suffers from frost, so it is rarely closed due to bad weather. From the Kingsbridge to Salcombe road take the turning to Thurlestone, or South Milton, and continue through either village until you reach the sea. The course measures 6230 yards from the White Tees, whilst the ladies are faced with 5538 yards. Spectacular views may be enjoyed from every hole on the course, which provides a challenge to all levels of golfer, especially when the wind blows.
Bigbury Golf Course
There's a smile in the welcome for new members and guests alike - and a stiff challenge in the 18-hole, 6000-yard, par-70 golf course. That is assuming you can tear your eyes away from the views in all directions: Dartmoor to the north, Burgh Island to the west, and on the eastern flank, Bantham Beach and the winding River Avon

These two charming converted cottages are set in a peaceful, secluded spot close to the village of Cheriton Bishop on the edge of Dartmoor and enjoy panoramic countryside views. Both cottages are near, but not overlooked by the owner's farmhouse, and each have their own gardens and parking areas. Spacious and attractive, they provide very comfortable, modern accommodation in this very peaceful location. The properties are 12 miles west of Exeter and just five minutes from the A30 giving great access to the whole of the West Country. A charming, well equipped recreation area, with large trampoline, swings and toys is provided. Come here too, to be cosseted and totally relax, for within the grounds of Lewdon Farm is a special yoga room, two treatment rooms, steam room and hot tub cabin . All these facilities are available to guests by arrangement with the owners and for an additional charge. Add aromatherapy massage, reflexology or Indian head massage and you have 'Baobab' at Lewdon Farm.
